Tell people what you are going to say. Tell them the detail of the topic. Then
remind them of what you said. Like a three act play, your topics should have
an opening, a middle and an end.
There is power in three. You’ll notice in these courses there is an
introduction, where I tell you what I’m going to tell you. Then there is the
middle part, the bulk of the lectures where I tell you. Then there is the
conclusion where I tell you what I told you.
Think about this as you prepare you presentation. Provide and outline of
what you are going to say. Your audience then knows what to expect, they
are prepared for the information and will retain much more of the detail.
Following the main content of that particular topic remind the audience of
what you said so the key points stick.
Finding ways of linking your topics enables smooth transitions from one
point to the next. Steve Jobs said the following after demonstrating new
iPhone features, "The iPhone is not standing still. We keep making it better
and better and better. That was the second thing I wanted to talk about
today. No. 3 is about iTunes." In doing so the outline he also provided
guideposts mapping the direction of his presentation.
In preparing your presentation make sure you provide an outline of what
you are going to say so your audience know what you expect and are
prepared for it.
