Buying your first Boat (Things to Keep in Mind)

Buying your first Boat (Things to Keep in Mind) How to make sure you don't get a lemon when buying your first boat. Well first we're going to start with the engine. The engine is the most important, expensive and exciting part of the boat so we need to make sure it is running properly. We are going to trim the engine to the lowest setting so that we can take the engine cover off. Do a quick inspection of the engine itself. check to make the skeg ( lower fin) has not been damaged. Check the propeller to make sure it is spinning freely and true. I recommend checking the oil in the lower transfer case since especially if you are unsure of the exact history with the boat. Might be a good idea to avoid the boat if there are metal shavings inside the oil, this could indicate a problem inside the transfer case. Next we'll want to get the engine running. Use muffs to start the engine on land if you cannot get the boat to water. Make sure your engine is spitting out water ensuring the engine is being properly cooled. When the engine is running listen for a metallic pinging sound. The engine should sound smooth and run properly. With the engine running put the boat in forward and reverse gears to check the operation, the throttle selector should go in smoothly to each gear. Do not over rev the engine.
When you are satisfied with the engine check the complete hull of the boat. Look for spider cracking that can indicate rough water or hard use. Look for crack and chips missing. Check the interior of the boat the seats, floor and all compartment to look for damage. Check the battery compartment and make sure everything looks clean and tidy.
Next check the steering, it should move back and forth freely and the engine should move with little to no resistance. Make sure the wheel is mounted properly. Check the throttle and ignition, function them and make sure there are no loose wires and everything is functioning properly.
Last but not least check the trailer, find out about tires wheel bearings and leaf springs. When we're the bearings last greased and make sure the trailer lights work. Check the crank and tie downs where the boat would be attached to the trailer and make sure everything looks good.

If there are any slight problems when looking at the boat is is up to you whether it is within your budget to fix them and these problems should be factored into the price you offer to the seller.

IMPORTANT! 👇👇👇
Double check all Vin numbers on the boat plate inside the boat, trailer plates and motor serial numbers to ensure the paperwork matches!
