RICH people don’t get rich by accident or by luck. OK, apart from the ones who win the lottery or whose millionaire aunt leaves them a fortune when she pops her clogs. I’ve been an entrepreneur since I left university and there are certain habits I do that are crucial to my success. When I started to look around at my fellow wealthy entrepreneurs, I saw that they do these habits too. Check out my Top Ten habits and they will help you build a successful business…
Get up, lazybones! According to research by Vanderkam, 90 per cent of executives are up by 6am on weekdays – and I am one of them. How often do you complain that there aren’t enough hours in the day? I gain an extra couple of hours by getting up so early. I go to the gym and catch up on the news or listen to an audiobook while I am on the running machine. Talk about multitasking!
Find your network ethic. According to research, 79 per cent of wealthy people spend at least five hours a month networking, while just 16 per cent of non-wealthy do. Networking simply means getting out and meeting people, promoting yourself or your business. I love this habit as I love meeting people. I try to meet at least one new person every day. This can be a tenant, customer, or someone simply looking for advice.
First on your list…I keep my mind focused on my goals by constantly making lists. I have daily, weekly, monthly and annual lists. It’s a fantastic way to keep track of your achievements, see how near or far you are to hitting targets and it keeps you organised. But making a list is only half the battle. You need to make sure you actually get through the points on it!
Book your place. Read, read, and read some more. I read two non-fiction books a week. Research shows 86 per cent of wealthy people love to read, compared to 26 per cent of non-wealthy people. Barack Obama summed it up: “Reading is the gateway skill that makes all other learning possible.”
Ahead of your time. Successful people don’t waste time. They aren’t distracted by mindless telly, they don’t constantly scroll through social media looking at what their friends had for lunch. You can’t get time back, so don’t waste it. I don’t do social media, apart from LinkedIn. I just don’t have the time!
Keep going. Successful people never just “settle”. We always want to kick on, to be better, to do better. We never rest on our laurels, we always want to keep challenging ourselves. Buying failing companies and turning them around is addictive. And I should know, I’ve done it often enough.
Risky business. Successful entrepreneurs aren’t afraid of taking risks. I do it all the time with my companies but I take calculated risks. I don’t just leap blindly into something, cross my fingers, and hope for the best. And if the risk doesn’t pay off, I always have a back-up plan.
Look after yourself. When you are starting out, you’ll feel you have to work 24/7. But you’ll be more productive if you take regular breaks, balance work and home life, and eat well. Successful people take regular exercise and watch what they eat. Limit alcohol and sugar. Take care of your body and your mind will thank you for it.
People power. Successful people like me know how important it is to have good relationships with colleagues and clients. I go one step further though. I try to get on with and be polite to everyone I come across, whether that’s the CEO of a company, or the person cleaning the CEO’s office. Have empathy, be kind and people will always remember you.
Call of duty. I believe successful people owe it to society to give something back. Social Bite is a good cause that’s really close to my heart. It is helping to end homelessness and I’ve been its top fundraiser for three years. I also do a property networking event with profits going to the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home. I don’t have a lot of spare time but for me, that’s the purr-fect way to spend it!
