Part of our hygiene series is about your radiographic policy. As a practicing dentist you should have an appropriate policy that protects and benefits your patient demographic.
Radiographs should be taken based on patient needs and those needs should be outlined in your policies.
For example a Prosthodontic office policy should be similar to this:
1. Bitewing X-Rays (1) Once a year
2. Full FMX taken every (3) years
3. Pano taken every (5) years.
These are polices and should strongly be recommended to patients. Not all patient will say yes but it should still be presented to every patient regardless of health status.
Why is this so important? Because we want to keep our patients healthy. Dentists and hygienists can't see everything. We can not see between teeth, bone height levels, sists or a lot of things that can help prevent dental or oral issues before they become a problem.
The key is to inform your patients before a visit that these exams need to be completed. When the patient arrives, the hygienist and reinforce the importance of the radio-graphs.
