Under cabinet lights - DIY installed (Hampton Bay 3 lights set from Home Depot)
This kit is not plug and play, but needs some DIY skills. These are the steps and materials and tools I used.
The kit comes with 3 lights and each light has a 4 feet long wire (which can easily be extended) to reach the included 6 feet long power extension cord with 3 plugs. It also has a power button switch (which I will show in my part 2 video).
Tools needed:
1. power drill with 2 drill bits (1.25" drill bit and 1/4" bit)
2. wire cutter
3. small hammer
4. 10 feet 14 gauge electric wire.
Steps to install:
1. Start with the 6 feet long extension wire. Try plug it into the wall outlet behind your kitchen, and drill 1.25" holes between the cabinets so it can reach to the middle of the 3 lights. For me, it was the cabinet above my stove and range hood.
2. Install 3 lights by pulling the wires to the 6 feet extension cord above the stove, this is because each light needs to be plug into the 6 feet power plug. The wire is extendable by removing the back of the light plug for each light. You can see that in the beginning of this video to see how I open up the 4 feet long light wire. You do this so you can drill smaller holes about 1/4" to fit the light wire through cabinets to reach the 6 feet extension power plug.
3. Once you have all 3 lights measured and pulled to the 6 feet extension power cord without installing them.
4. Plug each light into the power on the wall to make sure all 3 lights are working before next step.
5. Twist open the light glass cover (remove this to change light bulb) and mount them to the cabinet with the 3 nail screws. Drill small holes and pull the light wire through until it reaches the 6 feet power plug, add wire to extend if you need more than 4 feet to reach the power plug. I had to add wires for 2 of the 3 lights so they can reach the 6 feet power plug.
7. Install power button switch and screwed the switch base on the wall. See part 2 video. Basically, you need to install the switch between the Wall power plug and the power plug on the 6 feet power cord. So you can turn all 3 lights on/off at the same time. The neutral wire should be left alone, but the hot wire (the narrower prog) on the 6 feet extension cord. The wider prong is the neutral wire. Cut open the hot wire and fit both ends into the button switch. Entire DIY time 3 hours.
