He knows from the direction I am facing that the sheep are behind him (I always face the direction the sheep are to be found when casting a trained dog), and I use the "get away" command which is also the recasting casting (sometimes called the double cast, double lift, or look back/turn back).
The straight cast can be vital in rough country to avoid a dog casting so wide it either goes completely past sheep and misses them, or simply wastes lots of time and energy.
