Airplanes - Eco-friendly (Julia Atkinson)

Airplanes - Eco-friendly (Julia Atkinson) Words:
Transportation is a major part of our life. From driving to school, to biking to the store, transportation affects everyone. About 116 years ago, Wilbur and Orville Wright changed the world. They invented what we know as today, the airplane. But what they didn’t know, was that they had completely changed history. The Airplane can carry a haul of several hundred people from one place to the other. But the Airplane has also been known for being loud, big, and an overall gas guzzling machine. And currently, Airplanes have the worst greenhouse gas emissions per passenger when compared to other forms of transportation. Fortunately, in the last few years, airlines have been making more and more of an effort to be greener by making less of an impact on the environment. A great example of an eco friendly company, is Hi Fly. HiFly is an air lease corporation and airline. They are well known for their airplane liveries which promote eco friendly behavior. For example, Hi Fly has a “save the coral reefs” themed livery on their A380 and a “turn the tide on plastic” livery on their A330. But these eco-justice liveries aren’t the only thing they have done to promote environmentally friendly change. Hi Fly is well known for having completely single used plastic free flights. You can tell that the environment actually matters to them. Hi Fly is the first ever company to have a single-use plastic free flight. They saved 500 grams of plastic per person, and it kept getting better. 2 flights of a total of 700 passengers participated in the experience. And after their 12th flights, Hifly has had a significant plastic reduction which effected 3700 passengers. But Hi fly isn’t the only company bringing on the eco-friendly behavior. Delta, Alaska, and Air New Zealand are some of the Airlines beginning to phase out certain non-essential plastics like coffee stirs and straws from their flights and loungers. And many airlines are putting more vegetarian meals into their flights which is good because animals used for meat collectively consume lots of fresh water, grain or feed and produce carbon and methane gasses: this harms the environment. But when we put Hi Fly and other airlines side by side, there is no comparison to Hi Fly’s eco friendly-behavior. Because when Hi Fly came out with their first plastic free flight, it was found to be inspiring other airlines to become more eco friendly. So with the help of the first plastic free flight, we are well on our way to gradually becoming fully green when up in the air. Imagine the change.
