What is Spyware?

What is Spyware? Beware the pop-up ad -- it might be spyware in disguise. Learn what spyware is, how to detect spyware and ways to prevent spyware from infiltrating your devices.

“Spyware” is an umbrella term. Spyware is any software installed on a device without the user’s knowledge. Spyware is usually installed once a user unknowingly clicks on or downloads infected material, like pop-up ads or spoofed emails.

Adware, keyboard loggers, trojans, and mobile spyware are all forms of the cybercrime. Spyware typically violates an end user’s privacy -- sometimes even activating device cameras and microphones -- with the potential to abuse accounts and devices or steal personal information.
