The 9 point gaze exam is a screen used to assess extraocular muscle function and screen for potential central and peripheral signs. To complete the test, have the patient maintain their gaze at the 9 points noted in the video and hold for approximately 10-20 seconds per position (length in video has been shortened for demonstration purposes only). Major items to look for with this test are any ocular muscle malfunction and abnormal nystagmus patterns, including upbeat/downbeat nystagmus, gaze-evoked nystagmus, resting horizontal nystagmus, rebound nystagmus, see-saw nystagmus, torsional nystagmus, periodic alternating nystagmus and pendular nystagmus.
