NY mayor urges 'triumph over evil' after stabbing

NY mayor urges 'triumph over evil' after stabbing (30 Dec 2019) New York Mayor Bill de Blasio gathered with city residents in Brooklyn for a menorah lighting on the last day of Hanukkah as another Jewish community less than 40 miles away grappled with a stabbing attack at a Hanukkah celebration that injured five people.

"This holiday is when light triumphs over evil. And everyone, right now we see people attacking this community and we will not stand for it," de Blasio said.

A man stabbed five people as they gathered to celebrate Hanukkah at a rabbi's home in an Orthodox Jewish community north of New York City Saturday evening.

This past week in New York City itself, police have received at least six reports — eight since Dec. 13 — of attacks possibly motivated by anti-Jewish bias.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has said that police presence would increase in Brooklyn neighborhoods home to large Jewish populations.
