A massive block of ice broke off from a melting glacier and spilled over to a highway blocking traffic on an important highway in Kinnaur District of Himachal Pradesh on January 9. Traffic came to a halt on National Highway 5 near Tinku Nala after the massive chunk dropped from the mountain and started moving against the traffic.
A few cheeky drivers tried to squeeze past the ice that had blocked most of the road though in vain.
Similar incidents had blocked as many as 80 roads in the district state affecting traffic, said officials.
Border Roads Organization officials said around 400 laborers and 18 earth mover machines have been deployed to restore them.
Experts have warned that Himalayan glaciers are melting at an alarming rate due to global warning.
