U.S. Sends Amphibious Ship USS America to Japan for Protect New Base Near the China Sea Japan is buying an uninhabited island in the East China Sea to set up a military base in response to growing threats from China.
The island, near Okinawa, has been acquired by the Japanese government for £113 million and is expected to host US military exercises. It had previously been touted as a rocket launch site and a storage facility for spent fuel from nuclear reactors.
The base is designed to help Japan bolster its defenses in the face of growing Chinese maritime threats across the region including the South China Sea.
On 8 Dec. Amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) joined the U.S. 7th Fleet forward-deployed amphibious force in Sasebo after transiting the Pacific Ocean from its former homeport of San Diego.
