The Ballad of European Integration | a Short Film

This short film is a result of international youth exchange, co-funded by the the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

PROJECT
a brief summary

We are currently facing a crisis of values that lay at the foundations of the process of European integration. In our opinion however, the problem is not that those values are no longer valid today, but rather stems from the fact that after over 60 years form the Treaties of Rome the average person has forgotten what those values were. We believe that to know where one is heading, one needs to know from where he came from. Thus it is time to remind ourselves what is our common goal. We also want to prove that living in peace and harmony is possible because we have still more in common that not – we are all people and our actions are based on common values.

On the way to reach our main objective we have set ourselves some milestones:
1. To analyse the hierarchy of needs and compare it to how it was before.
2. To get to know better the elements of folklore of our countries and to try to build on their base a new, composite, fictional culture XYZ, which has become a canvas for our Ballad of European Integration.
3. To think through the message we wanted to share with our audience. This message is the hidden wisdom emanating from our Ballad, most clearly visible in the lyrics of the last, fourth song.
4. To create and record the Ballad of European Integration. We chose the ballad (from the old Provencal balar – to dance) as a form of a tale of song and dance.

Our Ballad of European Integration is set in a fictional culture being a mix of elements of folklore of our three countries. It is a tale of music, song and dance with our message at its core. For the overall topic we chose the Midsummer rituals which are present in some form in most European cultures. Even the etymology of its name is in line with the idea of our project – contrary to common beliefs, the Polish word “Kupala” stems from the indo-european fraction kump meaning z gathering, a community.
