Hotel Alankar Veg, located just off Arcot is an oasis for vegetarians on this stretch of the Chennai - Bengaluru highway. A restaurant, unlike a typical highway stop, Hotel Alankar exudes character in its swish and cosy yet earthy setting.
In this episode, Food Lovers’ editor, Kripal Amanna stops by for an evening snack on his way back to Bengaluru from Arcot. He savours the scrumptious paneeyarams and a flavoursome podi idli before settling down with an Alankar combo platter that encompasses a tasting of the eatery’s popular snacks.
GOURMET ON THE ROAD RATINGS
KUZHI PANIYARAM
this kuzhi paniyaram is roasted to the perfect crunch and is pillowy soft on the inside. flavours of green chilli, coriander and curry leaves, make each bite delectable. the snack to relish steaming hot on a nippy evening. definitely taste these with the slightly sweet yet fiery onion and tomato chutney for an added kick of flavour!

PODI IDLI
love these soft, tiny idlis tossed in a generous measure of spicy podi. the crunch of the lentils, mellow red chilli heat and toasty herbaceousness of the curry leaves is such a delicious combination of textures and flavours. the mild acidic sweetness of the tomato chutney takes this podi idli in a whole new direction!

MILLET ADAI & AVIYAL
made with rice, a mixture of lentils, chilli and curry leaves, this is certainly not a light snack! you taste the delicious wholesomeness of the millets and lentils. served with a coconut oil laced aviyal and jaggery but is tasty enough to be eaten just by itself! the jaggery though definitely transforms the adai from a savoury snack to a borderline dessert, something that will appeal to those with a sweet tooth.

SPECIAL COMBO
this special combo is a bunch of goodies to snack on with a side of piping hot filter coffee! the savouries include a urad dal bonda, a raw banana bajji and a kara kozhukattai that tasted like an upma. my favourite though was the sweet, nutty version of the kozhukattai made with the chemba rice, jaggery, coconut and flavoured with cardamom. this chased down with some strong coffee is divine!
