Some background of when I learned to budget seriously was through Dave Ramsey, but have since created my own system. The budget, rule of thumb we cover on this video is the 50-20-30 Rule which is the following:
50% of pay check goes to Necessities = living expenses.
20% for Savings= retirement accounts, military is TSP (thrift savings plan), IRA (individual retirement account), emergency fund or what I like to call my “F you money”, taxable investment accounts (stocks, bonds, mutual funds)
30% on Lifestyle = things that help you enjoy your quality of life. It can be gym fees, hobbies, YOUR DOG.
Managing Your Military Pay or any pay is valuable because it provides a strong building block towards wealth. The best beer budget is one where you are aware of your spendings when going out in town.
