In this video I explain the system that provides the electricity for the house I have grown up in, which is not connected to the electrical grid. Power primarily comes from our solar panels and is stored in batteries. This is 12V DC and we have an inverter that converts it to 120V AC power, typical for residential electricity. Though we do have many traditional appliances we have some special appliances which use much less energy than typical ones. These make is possible for our house to run on such a small system. If you have any questions, please write it in a comment and I will do my best to answer (including any specifics about particular components or appliances).
