Competing against Kipchoge in the male category was Joshua Cheptegei, Sam Kendricks, Noah Lyles and Karsten Warholm. Each of these respective athletes had tremendous seasons as well, but what truly separated Kipchoge from his peers was the level of history that was made this year over the marathon. Indeed, Warholm went undefeated (400m and 400mh) and Lyles won a double gold (200m, 4X100m), but the level of international acclaim accomplished by Kipchoge was nearly untouchable.
The only athlete I saw with a realistic chance of challenging Kipchoge this year was Karsten Warholm of Norway who, as previously mentioned, went undefeated over both the 400m and the 400 meter hurdles. Warholm also clocked a 46.92 400mh this year, good for 2nd all time.
Indeed the male field was certainly strong, but Kipchoge once again reigns supreme. Congratulations Eliud!! We're all looking forward to 2020!
