The grounds are now private property, but that did not stop us.
Brief History:
The hospital was designed by William Bonython Moffat & was built by John Jay.
Prince Albert laid the foundation stone in 1853.
Originally called The Asylum for Idiots, it opened its doors in June 1855.
John Langdon Down (after whom Down Syndrome was named) was medical superintendent of the hospital from 1855 to 1868.
The asylum was renamed The Royal Earlswood Institution for Mental Defectives in June 1926.
Katherine & Narissa Bowes-Lyon, who were nieces of the Queen Mother & first cousins of the Queen, were both admitted in 1941. Both had been listed as deceased in 1963, which was untrue Narissa remained in the hospital for 45 years & Katherine for 55 years. They were both buried in pauper’s graves in Redstone Cemetery which is only a stones throw from the Hospital.
In later years the hospital was renamed The Royal Earlswood Hospital, it closed its doors in March 1997.
The building has now been converted into luxury apartments called Victoria Court.
