Many hand tools are multi-functional, but for our money, there is NO MORE USEFUL TOOL than the Painter’s Tool, also called a 5-in-1, or 6-in-1, or Scraper. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will explain just why the Painter’s Tool is the MOST USEFUL TOOL IN THE WORLD!

MINI-HACKSAW—A VERY HANDY TOOL:
The Painter’s Tool isn’t just for painters. It’s a multi-use, multi-functional tool that will augment the tool collection of every person who owns one. Painters, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, homeowners and DIYers can all benefit from owning this tool.
10 USES FOR THE PAINTER’S TOOL / 5-IN-1 / 6-IN-1:
1. Cleaning Paint Rollers: The curved inner wall of the painters tool can be used for pushing excess paint out of paint rollers (which can hold more than ½ pint in the roller nap!) It works for both full-sized rollers, and mini-rollers.
2. Opening Paint Cans: The flat head on the tool is perfect for prying up paint lids with ease. It can also be inserted beneath the lid and drawn backwards like a can opener to get gunked up paint can lids unstuck.
3. Hammer Striking: Most painters tools and 5-in-1s now come with a metal butt on the end. This is great for driving paint can lids back down. It can also be used for general striking on the jobsite (though it’s not useful for driving nails!)
4. Paint Scraping: Perhaps the most common use, the beveled blade of the painter’s tool is perfect for scraping paint. It’s flat and yet sturdy, and can be wedged beneath paint chips with ease. Just be sure to wear a glove when you’re scraping paint.
5. Corner Gouging: The painters tool has a sharp pick on the other end of the head, which is great for scraping paint and grime out of corners. Just draw it down in a slashing motion to dislodge caulk and paint.
6. Spreading Putty: The flat blade of the painters tool or 5-in-1 is also perfect for spreading putty. It works as a simple trowel to fill nail holes and cracks with putty or woodfillers.
7. Nail Prying: The small teardrop shape on the body of the painters tool can be used for lightly prying up small nails.
8. Surface Protection: The Painters tool or 5-in-1 can be used in conjunction with a hammer to pry out larger fasteners. It can act as a protective surface for the head of the hammer to transfer leverage onto. This will preserve trim and walls.
9. Light Chiseling: The bevel of the painters tool or 5-in-1 is strong enough to split end grain in most wood, and also split face grain in soft woods. You can just tap it in with a hammer.
10. Prying Materials Apart: By far the most useful function of the painters tool or 5 in 1 is prying materials apart. The tool is so flat and strong, it can be driven into gaps between two materials, then gently leveraged to begin working those materials apart. It is far more gentle on surfaces than blunt demolition tools.
