How Efficient is Your Air Conditioner? Curtin FM Interview with Andrew Ford and Jenny Seaton

How Efficient is Your Air Conditioner? Curtin FM Interview with Andrew Ford and Jenny Seaton Ford & Doonan Air Conditioning's Managing Director Andrew Ford was invited to comment on the rising energy costs in Western Australia.

Here, he discusses how small changes to the operation and usage of your air conditioner can have a big change to your energy bill.

1. Keep the set temperature between 23° and 25°. Any lower than 23° and the air conditioner is working a lot harder. Every one degree lower than 23° increases running costs by 10%.

2. Clean the inside filter. A clogged filter will dramatically affect the air conditioner’s ability to cool.

3. Ensure there are no obstructions that surround the outdoor unit’s airflow. Blocking and caging up the outdoor unit will reduce its ability to blow hot air out, and will essentially mean its “eating its own air” causing the system to work harder and harder, and eventually overheating.

4. If you have a reverse cycle ducted air conditioner with zone system functionality, only open the zones you’re using at that point in time. Don’t try to cool rooms that aren’t being used, and close the doors to those rooms that aren't being used.

5. If you have a split system and the room conditions are very warm, as soon as you turn on the air conditioner to cooling, open a window and a door to allow for air circulation. The first 10 minutes with fresh airflow and assist the system dramatically when cooling. Be sure to close them after 10 minutes.

6. Draw the curtains during the day time. Keep the direct sunlight out by closing blinds and curtains at all times.

7. Use the air conditioners' timer function. Most modern air conditioners have a timer function. Set this before you leave in the morning so that the air conditioner cycles itself on before you arrive home. Meaning you arrive home to a cool house, and the air conditioner can run at an efficient speed. Do the reverse at night, set the timer to switch off the air conditioner after a few hours. Split systems usually have a special “Sleep Function “ This raises the set temperature by 1 degree after an hour, and turns off the system after 5 hours.
