ECMO machine helped to save life of student who contracted flu virus overseas Heng Wee Heng, 20, developed what he thought was a "common cold", but it turned out to be
severe respiratory failure caused by the H1N1 influenza. It almost sent him to the brink of death.
The Singaporean student landed in hospital for nearly a month, half of which was spent
on life support. On top of the conventional mechanical ventilator, doctors at the Singapore
General Hospital put Wee Heng on the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, or ECMO, machine.
