8. PAVLOPETRI
At the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea south of modern-day Greece lies the sunken city of Pavlopetri. Archaeologists believe that the once-bustling port, which is now four meters (13.1 feet) underwater, is the oldest submerged ancient city found to date, with origins dating back some 5,000 years.
7. NEAPOLIS
The ancient city of Neapolis was founded on the northeastern Tunisian coast during the fifth century BC. It changed hands several times between warring factions and eventually became a major Roman port.
6. LAKE VAN CASTLE
In 2016, a team of divers led by underwater photographer Tahsin Ceylan discovered a fortress at the bottom of Turkey’s largest waterbody, Lake Van, near the harbor of a centuries-old town called Adilcevaz.
5. THE TEMPLES OF MAHABALIPURAM
Located in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the ancient city of Mahabalipuram is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its archaeological marvels. Between the third and ninth centuries AD, Mahabalipuram was part of the Pallava Dynasty.
4. PORT ROYAL
In 1655, the English conquered Jamaica from the Spanish. They established the unofficial capital of Port Royal on the southeast coast, at the mouth of Kingston Harbor. To ensure its defense, in 1657, Governor Edward D’Oyley permitted a group of privateers to take up headquarters at Port Royal.
3. CUBA’S SUNKEN CITY
In the roughly 200,000 years since humans emerged into existence, the sea level has never fallen below 120 meters (395 feet). However, in 2000, ocean engineer Paulina Zelitsky and her husband, Paul Weinzweig, discovered unusual structures 2,300 feet (700 meters) beneath the water’s surface south of Cuba’s western tip.

The small village of Dunwich is located near England’s east coast between Walberwick and Southwold in Suffolk County. Dunwich was England’s tenth-largest town during the 11th century, with its population peaking around 3,000 residents.

The partially-sunken ancient Roman resort town of Baiae can be found 16 kilometers (10 miles) off the coast of Naples, Italy. Baiae, which was once located over natural volcanic vents, was a place for the Roman elite.
