Lecture 18 Limiting and Excess Reactants and Fractional Conversions

Lecture 18 Limiting and Excess Reactants and Fractional Conversions From this video we will start handling material balance problems that involve chemical reactions. But first, various terminology associated with chemical reactions have been discussed in this video. With an example, it has been explained how you can write stoichiometric ratios and use it as a conversion factor in order to find out the moles of all the other species being consumed or produced when you know the number of moles of any one species being consumed or formed. This video also explains how to find which reactant is limiting and which one is used in excess. For the later case it is taught how to calculate percentage excess of any component. In the end this video deals with fractional conversion. Conversion is very important while handling material balance problems with reaction. None of the reactor is designed for reaction that goes to 100% completion and most of the time this process specification will be given and has to be used while performing material balance when reactions are involved
