Join artist Albert Paley as he takes you through his career development and artistic process. Paley started out as a jeweler before transforming his practice to create larger-scaled metalworks, in part due to a work commissioned by the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery in 1974 for their museum shop entrance titled "Portal Gates." Paley discusses how his artwork focuses on a dialogue between art and architecture within the public arena. Learn how he strives to build a sense of place identity and visual experience with his work, as well as how his sculptures engage the landscape plan, architectural space, and the pedestrian experience. The Clarice Smith Distinguished Lectures in American Art highlight excellence and innovation in American art with outstanding artists, critics, and scholars.
