Searching for dog toys that are interesting and does not require you to bend over and pick it up from the ground is kind of challenging. Before you think of me as lazy, let me just tell you that it was not for me. It was for my husband. My husband had a huge umbilical hernia that required him to have a 23 inch mesh in 2016. After the surgery, it took him more than a year to recover. After the recovery, my husband was never the same. He is more careful about bending and picking stuff up from the ground which made playing with our dogs a little awkward. For awhile he only plays with the dogs indoors in a couch and unless the dogs give the toy back, playing fetch ends rather quickly. A quick play for the havanese is alright but for a blue heeler, it isn't. Dusty requires a lot of exercise, otherwise he would be playing the whole night on his own which is not a problem either if you are tired enough to ignore the crunching and squeking of toys. Thus, the extra play time for the little ball of energy.
We thought about the ball launcher but then we really want to be involved with his play time. Dusty gets tired of playing with the same toy over and over, especially if he has no playmate. However, he gets very motivated to play whenever my husband takes part. He can play tug and fetch for hours if hooman is actually participating. So, we got the Chuckit ball thrower.
Chuckit comes in 3 sizes the small medium and large. The medium size can fit tennis ball so this is the size that we got for him. The toy comes with a ball thrower and an orange tennis ball. You may also choose a rubber ball (no fuzzies) but since this is a test, we settled for the tennis ball type and didnt order one. The chuckit costs $5.49 from Amazon and the rubber ball set of 2 costs $5.44. The toy came in two days via Amazon Prime and we tried it indoor. My husband swung the thrower towards the hallway several times and Dusty was more than happy to chase and pick up the ball. Although it can be used indoor just fine, I think it is best to use it in the backyard or dog park especially if the one using is a kid.
To test the ball launcher outdoors, we visited the nearby dog park, Beulah Regional Dog Park. The place was not crowded and it has 2 fenced in areas for dogs. One area is for leashed and the other area is for off-leash dog. The dog park is very clean and surrounded by tall trees. The whole fenced in area is actually shaded even though it is mid-day.
Back to the ball launcher, it is light and easy to use. The best part is, my husband didnt have to get to the ground to get it. If your dog does not drop the ball, you can try to get it from his mouth with the chuckit or you can try to distract your dog and grab the ball with the chuckit. Overall, the toy did perfectly well and is very convenient to use for my husband. Although, I wish we got the the rubber ball because the tennis ball seem to pick up a lot of sticks and everything else after Dusty had kind of stretched some of the fuzzies.
I will be adding the link of the video soon!
