So, apparently we live in a world where Harry Maguire is genuinely worth £80m. The slab headed half fox half lion looks like he’s destined to command a higher transfer fee than Matthijs De Ligt who this week completed his record breaking transfer move from Ajax to Juventus for £67.5 million quid. Being the third most expensive teenager in football history, many are suggesting De Ligt will be the world’s greatest defender once he matures into his role at the back for the Turin faithful on a wage of potentially up to £21.7 million per season or £416,000 per week if his performance add-ons are met.

Compare this to an investment in Harry Maguire. There’s no denying that the 26 year old had an immense word cup with England, solidified Brendan Rogers’ back line last season and is seen as the massive headed hero of the midlands to Leicester fans, but, is he really worth the £80m Manchester United seem willing to pay for him?

Clearly United have defensive issues considering Smalling and Jones would probably struggle even in the championship, but can Ole Gunnar Solksjaer really justify spending such amounts of money on a player who statistically is worse than De Ligt?

19 year old De Ligt captained Ajax to the Eredevisie title last season as well as the semi finals of the Champions League which only saw a last gasp Lucas Moura goal stop them from getting to the final after beating Real Madrid AND Juventus. Because of his stellar performances for such a young man, he won the golden boy award as well as the Eredivisie player of the year. Not bad for a teenager. He was integral in Ajax keeping 15 clean sheets throughout last season while Maguire only managed 6 in 31 games. To be fair to Harry, he’s playing in a much more competitive league and he played less minutes, but still….. Stats

De Ligt had a 90% pass accuracy while Maguire only managed 85% and in terms of aerial battles, De Ligt comes out on top again, 129 to 118. De Ligt completed more tackles, more passes, kept more clean sheets, is younger and is cheaper…. So we have to ask the question.

When you think that people were laughing and pointing fingers at Liverpool’s transfer policies when they signed Virgil ‘The Tank’ Van Dijk for £75m, is this a stroke of managerial genius or is Ole clutching at straws to sure up his defense… See what we did there? Virgil Van Dijk seems like a complete steal at £75m now considering he was the absolute rock of Jurgen Klopp’s champions league winning side, as much as I like Maguire, let’s be honest, he’s just not as good as Van Dijk is he? Can Man UTD really justify breaking their defensive transfer record by bringing in the 50p headed freight train.

Honestly, in all of my managerial experience (Blackpool Premier League Invincibles 2024) I wouldn’t pay a penny over £50m for Harry Maguire, but then maybe this is just the worrying trend perpetuating itself in this country where English players go for a massive premium because they were born on this tiny island. What do you reckon? Do you reckon ol’ slab head is worth £80m or is this just supply and demand gone mental. Consider for a second that Liverpool paid for Fernando Torres ‘A QUARTER’ of what Utd are willing to pay for Harry Maguire…. Although it’s like a decade ago, £80m is still a joke mate
