Bagan - Proposed World Heritage Site

Bagan - Proposed World Heritage Site Bagan, being in the hearts of Myanmar people, is a cultural, archaeological and historical site located on the eastern bank of Ayeyawaddy River, Mandalay Region, in Central Myanmar. Being the capital of the first Myanmar Kingdom from 11th to 13th centuries AD, the monument area of Bagan comprises a scattering of villages, small towns amid clusters of brick structures, spreading over about 45 square kilometers.

Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural heritage is irreplaceable source of life and inspiration. Through the lenses from all walks of life, Bagan In Our Hearts advocates protection and preservation of cultural heritage of Bagan, exemplifying her outstanding value to humanity, to be inscribed on the World Heritage Site List.

To be inscribed on the World Heritage Site List according to UNESCO, sites must be of outstanding universal value and meet at least one out of ten selection criteria (i.e. six cultural and four natural criteria; see details for the selection criteria at

In January 2018, Bagan has been nominated under three cultural criteria (iii), (iv) and (vi) in order to enhance the protection and preservation of cultural heritage of Bagan. In September 2018, Bagan was independently evaluated by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) which respectively provides the World Heritage Committee with evaluations of the cultural and natural sites nominated. In June 2019, Bagan, among 36 nominated sites, will be decided by the intergovernmental World Heritage Committee on her inscription.

Had Bagan been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site List in 2019, the resulting prestige would raise awareness among citizens and government for her heritage preservation and protection. Greater awareness would lead to a general rise in the level of the protection and conservation given to her outstanding value and heritage properties. Bagan may also receive financial assistance and expert advice from the World Heritage Committee to support activities for the preservation of her heritage properties to exemplify the outstanding value of Bagan.
