In a bizarre development, a minister in Chhattisgarh, a state in central India, warned voters that they would get an “electric shock” for pressing any button on the electronic voting machines, or EVM, in their polling booths other than that meant for the Indian National Congress candidate.
Congress, the main opposition, toppled the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in regional elections late last year in Chhattisgarh, once a BJP bastion, and is now trying hard to pull voters toward it in the national polls.
“Only press the first button [for the Congress candidate] on the EVM,” said Kawasi Lakhma, the state’s commerce and industries minister, at a rally in support of Biresh Thakur, his party’s candidate from Chhattisgarh’s Kanker region, this month.
“If you press the second button, you will get an electric shock. The third button [too] has [electric] current,” he said in his speech, part of which was aired on local news channels.
It is not just the opposition that has resorted to such tactics, even leaders of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist BJP have issued veiled warnings to voters.
Maneka Gandhi, Modi’s minister for women and child development who is contesting in northern Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur constituency, implied she would be reluctant to work for minority Muslims if they did not vote for her.
“I’m confident of my victory. But if this win comes without the support of Muslims, I’ll not feel very good,” she told a gathering, the video of which has gone viral. Her remarks are particularly controversial given that India has endured race riots and Muslims, which make up about 14% of the population, often feel socially and economically marginalized.Top 10 News TOP 10 NEWS is a daily news channel TOP 10 NEWS is dedicated to delivering all the latest news including breaking news, regional news, We are a Web Channel Mainly Focus On Telugu Politics (Telangana & Andhra Pradesh) We cater the info needs of the two Telugu states and Telugu Diaspora across the world.
