My girlfriend and I are getting married so we went to get the paperwork done by a notary public at a court in Delhi and they tried to rip us off! There were touts at the court waiting for us and when we got to the notary public office they had already been informed that a foreigner was coming and they tried to charge me 1100rs for an affidavit. The correct price is under 100rs. These lawyers were total scammers trying to rip people off. We got angry at them and left! That was enough to make us decide we can't deal with these scam lawyers and we decided to go get all our marriage documents prepared by a private lawyer that my girlfriend knows.
I had wanted to do it all myself for fun and so I knew the process, but that turned out to be too hard with these lawyers trying to scam us the second we entered the court. I thought an Indian court would be the last place I'd meet scammers trying to take advantage of me!
Beware of touts at the courts and make sure you search online for a list of the prices that a Notary Public (Government Lawyer) is allowed to charge you.
