Bohag Bihu also known as Rongali Bihu is a major festival celebrated in the state of Assam in the Northeast of India. Bohag Bihu marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year. It is celebrated around April every year. Bihu songs and dances are an essential part of the Bihu festival. The slowly rising tempo and the catchy melodies of the Bihu songs along with the gyrating dance steps make it one of the most popular folk dances in the country. In the modern times, a Bihu function is observed where local artists and celebrity artistes are invited to perform on stage. This type of functions are also called ‘Bohagi Bidai’, which marks the end of the festival season.
